Tree Planting

Planting a tree is a long-term investment in your landscape—and when done right, it gives your tree the best chance to thrive. Follow these essential steps to ensure success:

  • The best time to plant a tree in Halifax is early spring (after the ground has thawed) or in the fall—at least three weeks before the ground freezes.

  • Make the hole twice as wide as the root ball, but only as deep. This gives roots room to spread without settling too low.

  • Make sure the trunk flare (where the trunk widens at the base) is visible above the soil line. Gently remove any excess soil covering it.

  • As you backfill the hole, water the tree to help eliminate air pockets and keep the roots moist.

  • Apply mulch around the base of the tree, but keep a 5 cm (2 inch) gap around the trunk to prevent rot and encourage healthy growth.

Following these steps helps young trees establish quickly and grow strong. For help selecting or planting the right tree in Halifax, contact Solid Tree Care for expert advice and planting services.
